The Video Platform Provides Users Authority to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform announced that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a global rollout. This development comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service only show content made by AI. A large amount of this content is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its total content library.

User Control Features

Viewers will be capable of reduce or increase the amount of artificial media they see by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the application and picking the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting cover news, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules oblige content makers to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful fake videos of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

Additionally, the service will henceforth add an artificially created watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This measure is designed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and institutions to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit educational bodies specializing in educating computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, following debate over intentions to make redundant a large number of content moderators in Britain. It is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead clarified that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
